HOEM MADA heralds an iconoclastic shift in Da'an's songwriting process. Whereas his debut album This was a collection of songs written alone and pieced together over months of work, HOEM MADA is a raucous EP of six songs formed over the course of a single month with frequent collaborator Matt Demsky. Simultaneously written and recorded by improvising takes of various instruments in a ping-ponging fashion, the EP's reliance on Dan and Matt's intuition results in a very organic-feeling collection of music. Vocals on tracks like "Monkey and the Seven Hairs" and "The Most Beautiful Song in the World" - first take improvs - lend the music a sense of serendipity and intimacy. Equal parts Talking Heads, Beach Boys, and David Lynch - HOEM MADA might as well christen the term subconscious-pop.
